The charming cover of Things a Bright Girl Can Do has stayed with me. When I unwrapped this book, I instantly recognised the title – it brought to my mind the beautiful purple, white and green final cover that I’d catalogued and shelved in my old school library. It had been a long time since I’d held a historical fiction, having just spent a few months with fantasy and magical realist children’s books. It was an interesting experience to have picked this book based on only the words ‘women’, ‘reform’ and ‘First World War’. Whilst I have organised and ran similar ‘blind date with a book’ events in the library before, I have never actually had the chance to take part in one! I obtained this book through a ‘mystery proof’ giveaway from the lovely Ebb & Flo Book Shop stall at the NYA Lit Fest in Preston earlier in the year.
